In 2005, Jon Bartnick, an inventor with a passion for boating, was in the process of upgrading his vessel. He and his wife were looking to trade in their 1987 Chris Craft 32 Amerisport for a newer, 37-foot Trojan Express. Everything was moving smoothly until the boat surveyor, Dave Borsma, delivered bad news: the stringers in the Chris Craft were soaked with rot. This unexpected discovery put the trade-in deal at risk.

Standing by as the survey unfolded, Jon had an idea. He turned to the broker and asked, “If I dry those stringers and repair them so they pass survey, will you still consider the trade-in?” The broker agreed, opening the door for what would become a breakthrough solution in boat restoration.

Jon got to work, drying the waterlogged stringers using a method he developed. To everyone’s satisfaction, the stringers came out dry and strong, allowing the deal to go through. The surveyor, impressed by the results, suggested Jon turn his method into a business. Inspired by the success, Jon founded Dryboat and later filed for a patent alongside a business partner.

Since that first project, Dryboat has transformed the way boat moisture issues are handled. Rather than resorting to invasive, costly “cut and replace” methods, Dryboat uses an advanced drying process to restore boats without altering their original structure, preserving their value and integrity. Today, over 15 years later, Jon’s former Chris Craft continues to have dry, solid stringers, a testament to the effectiveness of Dryboat’s approach.
